Engaging coverage of the Australian Curriculum v9.0 written specifically for Queensland students

Addressing the needs of a wide range of students

A continuum of learning for students as they transition from junior to senior sciences

Tools to help students keep track of their progress and learn independently

  • Learning goals at the start of the chapter outline what students can expect to cover and are linked to an end-of-chapter checklist that allows them to tick off their progress and use as a form of quick revision.

  • Videos summarise, clarify or extend student knowledge and are indicated by an icon in the print book.

  • Interactive widgets demonstrate concepts and are accompanied by downloadable question sets.
  • Section and chapter questions use the QCE cognitive verbs and are labelled as Retrieval, Comprehension, Analysis and Knowledge Utilisation to improve student thinking and prepare them for QCE studies.

  • Data questions at the end of each chapter encourage students to apply, analyse and interpret data, while Investigation tasks develop students’ inquiry skills, providing essential preparation for senior science courses.
  • New curriculum content is clearly addressed with fresh local content, including the new Science as Human Endeavour material exploring the impact both cultural perspectives and communication choices have on scientific knowledge, understanding, policies and individual viewpoints.

  • Queensland species or environments are used to demonstrate concepts wherever appropriate, helping students make connections in their science learning.

  • Evaluating and communicating skills are introduced and developed in the science skills chapter at each year level, guiding students to effectively evaluate evidence, and critically analyse data, claims and sources.

  • Science skills are also woven into the content of the chapters allowing students to learn skills in context and gain practice applying these skills

  • First Nations scientific skills and knowledge are appropriately covered as an additional method or practice within the content, and draw on examples that are specific to local Queensland and/or Torres Strait peoples.

The wide range of abilities and interests evident in Queensland classrooms is supported through the clear, student-friendly language, and developed and reinforced through a range of activities.

  • An appealing visual design with plenty of images and illustrations in an uncluttered, easy-to-follow layout makes this series accessible for all students.

  • Concept maps in the chapter opener give students a visual overview of the content and show how topics relate to one another. Practical colour coding makes it easy for students to draw connections between topics.

  • More extension activities are available in this edition covering mathematical processes, scientific skills, data questions and more.

  • Making thinking visible activities in every chapter encourage students to discuss and explore contemporary science ideas through visible thinking routines.

  • Quick checks and Explore! activities engage, support and extend every Year 7–10 student, while both long and short Try this activities for the classroom help explain and revise concepts.

  • Over 50 hands-on activities per year level offer both laboratory activities as well as longer investigations that develop students’ inquiry skills.
